With summer in full swing, the allergy season is now at an all-time high, which means you’re likely one of the millions of Americans who are suffering from itchy eyes. If this describes you, the good news is there are plenty of remedies you can do to feel better. Make sure you do the following things to protect your eyes during allergy season.
Take an allergy medication
An easy, quick fix for your allergy woes is to take an over-the-counter medication. Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec and many others are available at just about any drugstore or supermarket and have helped many people. As with any medication, consult your doctor first before using. You may need even a prescription allergy medication and your doctor can help with that as well.
Do not rub your eyes
A common sign of allergies is itchy and irritable eyes. It can be easy to try and relieve the suffering by rubbing your eyes, but doing so can also cause damage. Although it may be difficult, avoid rubbing your eyes and pursue a method to treat your allergy condition instead.
Drink plenty of water
With hot temperatures in the summer, it is easy to get dehydrated and that can have a negative effect on your eyes and make them even more prone to allergies. Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day and avoid beverages like soda that can dehydrate you.
Don’t leave contacts in too long
Are you someone who leaves contacts in while you sleep? If so, it’s time to stop that practice altogether. Not only is this practice bad during allergy season, it can have a negative impact on your overall eye health as well. Make sure to take your contacts out in the early evening and wear glasses at night time.
Following each of the tips above will help to remedy the symptoms you are experiencing during allergy season. If you have any questions, consult your eye doctor as well as your physician.
